HKLS field trip to 4 National Parks near Cha-Am in Thailand,  30th Jan. to 4th Feb. 2003

 Euthalia monina (Fabricius, 1778)

(Family Nymphalidae)

The colours and patterns of this butterfly are very variable over its distribution range.  Three subspecies appear to overlap in Thailand namely monina (Fabricius), remias (Corbet) and discispilota (Moore).  In addition, several prominent forms are also recognized.  This butterfly is dimorphic. In Hong Kong, a male Euthalia monina was spotted during the field trip on 25th July 1999 to Wong Chuk Yeung, Sai Kung. It has very strong background colour of dark green and the bluish coloured scales are very much reduced.  Do watch out for this butterfly in Hong Kong.  It has a fast flight and is very alert.
