Egg Caterpilla / Larva Chrysalis / Pupa

Adult Musa paradisiaca L. var. sapientum O. Ktze  

EGG - Eggs are laid in cluster measuring approx. 1.2mm in diameter and 1.0mm in height. They will hatch in about 4 days.

CATERPILLAR / LARVA - Larvae will make leaf shelters and grow up to 5 cm in length.

CHRYSALIS / PUPA - Pupation will occur inside the leaf shelter. The pupa measures about 3.3cm.

ADULT - It is the largest skipper in Hong Kong and is a serious pest for bananas. It is inactive during the day and tends to fly at dawn and dusk. It feeds on the flowers of the banana tree.

NAME OF FOOD PLANT - Musa paradisiaca L. var. sapientum O. Ktze 

OTHER RECORDED FOOD PLANTS - other Musa spp.

LOCATION SIGHTED - all rural villages where bananas are planted.

STATUS - uncommon.

WING SPAN - approximately 6.5 cm to 7.0 cm.

FLIGHT PERIOD/TIME OF YEAR - April to November.
