Adult Smilax china L. (Smilacaceae) Smilax china L. (Smilacaceae)

EGG - The egg is greenish in colour and is laid singly on top of leaves of its host plant. It measures about 1.1 mm in diameter.

CATERPILLAR / LARVA - The larva tends to stay on the underside of leaf and will feed on the leaf on which it rests. It grows from about 3.0mm to 4.0cm in length. The larval stage lasts about 23 days.

CHRYSALIS / PUPA - The larva will attach itself to a twig before pupation. The pupa measures about 3.5cm. The adult butterfly will emerge in about 12 days during the summer months.

ADULT - The adult butterfly has a swift flight. It feeds on fermented juices from rotten fruits and saps from trees. It tends to return to the same spot even after being disturbed. The male butterfly is very territorial. Both sexes are similar in appearance.

STATUS - common.

WING SPAN - approx. 6.0 cm.

VOLTINISM - many generations in a year.

FLIGHT PERIOD/TIME OF YEAR - March to November.
