EGG - is bluish white when freshly laid, singly on the underside of young foliage of its host plant. It measures about 1.0 mm in diameter and the larva will hatch in about 3 to 4 days.
CATERPILLAR / LARVA - the larval stage will last for 19 days and the larva measures from 4mm to2.8cm.
CHRYSALIS / PUPA - the larva will generally pupate on the underside of leaf. The pupa is brightly coloured and measures about 1.7cm. The adult will emerge in about 15 days.
ADULT - it has warning colours to advertise its poisonous properties derived from its host plant. It feeds readily on flowers.
NAME OF FOOD PLANT - Asclepias curassavica L. (Asclepiadaceae)
OTHER RECORDED FOOD PLANT - no other in Hong Kong
LOCATION SIGHTED - found only in the New Territories and in outlying islands. STATUS - uncommon.
WING SPAN - approximately 6.0cm to 7.0cm.
FLIGHT PERIOD / TIME OF YEAR - April to October.
